Introduction

Luang Prabang is an outstanding example of the fusion of traditional architecture and Lao urban structures with those built by the European colonial authorities in the 19th and 20th centuries.



Itinerary

Day 01- Arrival - Vientiane (no meal )

Will be met at Wattay Airport and transfer to your hotel. And then we start city tour, begin with the oldest, Wat Sisaket with thousands of miniature Buddha statues and the former royal temple of Wat Prakeo, which previously housed the famous Emerald Buddha Image. En route to Lao's national precious heritage, the famous and sacred structure of That Luang Stupa, you will have the opportunity to take some pictures of the imposing Patuxay Monument, which is well known as Vientiane's own Arc de Triumph. The final visit of the day will be the excellent COPE exhibition centre, highlighting a much overlooked aspect of Laos and a major problem many of the local people face on a day to day basis in the form of unexploded ordnance as a result of heavy bombing campaigns during the Vietnam War area.

Day 02 - Vientiane  -  Nam Ngum - Vang Vieng (Breakfast)

This morning we travel by the picturesque back roads to Vang Vieng.  En route we stop at Ban Keun, which is famous for its salt mine.  Here you can learn about the daily working life of the local people.  We then continue to Nam Ngum, a picturesque lake created by damming the Nam Ngum River.  Following lunch overlooking the lake after lunch we continue north, stopping at Tha Heua, a small village that specializes in dried fish, which you will see hanging in front of the houses.  We then reach Vang Vieng by late afternoon, where we have time to visit the picturesque Tham Jang cave, that offers stunning views of over the Nam Song River and surrounding karst scenery.  The rest of the day is at leisure. Day 03 - Vang Vieng - Luang Prabang (Breakfast)

We leave Vang Vieng this morning, making a short photo stop at Phatang Mountain view point to admire the beautiful scenery.  We also have an optional stop at Koe Kuang, which boasts a local forest market, offering edible snakes, rats and assorted reptiles!  We also make a stop at Ban Hin Ngon, a picturesque Hmong village, before arriving at Phou Khoun for lunchtime.  In the afternoon we stop to explore Ban Kiu Kam Pone, a Khmu village, and we have an opportunity to stretch our legs at the picturesque riverside village of Ban Nam Ming.  We arrive in Luang Prabang by late afternoon. Day 04 - Luang Prabang - Pak Ou Cave (Breakfast)

After breakfast, your short city tour starts with a visit to Wat Visoun, known as 'The Water Melon Stupa' due to its shape. Next we visit the excellent Arts and Ethnology Centre which gives us a further insight into the ethnic mix and culture of Laos. We also visit the magnificent Wat Xiengthong, with its roofs sweeping low to the ground, representing the classical Luang Prabang style. We then board a cruise upstream on the Mekong River, which gives us a panoramic view of the tranquil countryside. Our first stop is the village of Ban Muangkeo where we start a short trek to reach the mysterious Pak Ou Caves, two linked caves crammed with thousands of gold lacquered Buddha statues of various shapes and sizes left by pilgrims. We then return to Luang Prabang by car via Ban Nongxai, an artisans village and also to visit a silversmith workshop.  We arrive back in Luang Prabang by late afternoon. Breakfast. Overnight in Luang Prabang.

Day 05 - Luang Prabang - Kuangsi Water fall - Vientiane (Breakfast)

This morning, make an excursion to the lovely Kuangsi Waterfalls. Stop by Ban Xom (traditional Lao Loum village) and Ban Na Ouan, a small village of a hill-tribe group 'Hmong', probably the best-known minority group in Laos. In the afternoon, tour the former Royal Palace and the National Museum (close on Tuesday and Sunday afternoon) before having the rest of the day to roam the streets and soak in the charm of this lovely city. Met and transfer to your hotel. Breakfast. Overnight in Vientiane

Day 06 - Vientiane - Departure (Breakfast)

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight.
